What's your DRI?

Ever wonder what level of pesticides are on your plate? The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established levels that it considers safe. Charles Benbrock a research professor at Washington State University has created a Dietary Risk Index (DRI). This is a number that compares the average pesticide levels found on a food to the maximum safe level established by the EPA. A DRI of 100 means those levels are equal . Fortunately for most foods their DRI is below 100. But some foods approach six times the EPA's safe level. Although the EPA builds in a 100x to 1000x margin of safety. Protandim see link. Protandim is one MLM proprietary supplement that has gotten my attention because it has actual peer reviewed reseach behind it. This is not the manuafacturer saying we did reseach and found that it works, but studies done at places like Colorado State Department of Health and Exercise Science; Univeristy of Colorado School of Medicine; Louisiana State Univerity Health Sciences Center and others.

Reading the research is like reading a foreign language. So here are the basics. Oxidative stress (think of free radicals, little molecules that run around inside are bodies causing havoc) has been increasingly recognized as a contributing factor to aging. Some of us don't age as well as others. Protandim is a nutritional supplement made of five herbs: milk thistle, Ashwagandha, green tea, turmeric, and bacopa. This blend stimulates our body's own production of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutases (SOD), catalases, and glutathione peroxidases. Protandims blend of "phytochemicals" act synergistically so that acting together they produce a stronger effect then the sum of each taken seperately. Journal Abstract.

Protandim activates Nrf2 (Journal abstract). Nrf2 (nuclear factor-like 2) is referred to as the "master regulator" of the body's antioxidant response and influences genes that not only affect antioxidant enzyme production but genes that control immune and inflammatory response, tissue repair, carcinogenesis and metastasis, and even brain function and addictive bahavior. (Journal abstract)

Recent studies have shown that antioxidant enzyme expression and activity are drastically reduced in most human skin diseases. Skin cancer studies using mice given protandim showed 33% decrease in tumor incidence and a 57% reduction in number of tumors over mice who were not fed protandim. (Journal abstract) Investigators suggest that protandim may serve as a practical and potent approach for cancer prevention. (Journal abstract)

Protandim also appears to stimulate antioxidant activity to protect the lining of blood vessels but also suppress the production of oxidants that would harm it. (Journal abstract) For this reason protandim has been suggest as an intervention for cardiovascular disease, dementia, and Alzheimer disease.

Don't look at protandim as a treatment for vascular disease, dementia or cancers. It appears to facilitate the bodies production of antioxidants and suppress the production of damaging oxidative products. Antioxidants aid the body in repair of tissue damaged by poor diet, trauma or noxious chemicals. This in turn helps slow our aging process.
